Shetland Wind Power Ltd recently completed the design and installation of the prestigious turbine at Aith RNLI station in Aith, Shetland. This is the first turbine to be installed at an RNLI station in Britain and has proved a hit with the crew stating “its gloriously warm in here now!”. The crew at the station wanted to reduce their high electricity costs incurred in keeping the lifeboat engines warm to ensure the lifeboat can reach full power faster when responding to an emergency. It was also another milestone for Shetland as it was the first Westwind 20Kw to be installed in Shetland. For Further Information please click here.
Another recent landmark for Shetland was the installation of the first Evance R9000 5Kw turbine in the Islands. Commissioned on the 1st of October 2009 the turbine has produced over 14,500Kw in the first seven months of operation at Sandwick, Shetland. With plenty more orders for the Evance R9000 5Kw on the order book these turbines will be soon be making a welcome appearance in the islands.
Feed-in Tariffs (FITs) are about to be introduced in the UK, causing exciting changes in the small scale renewables industry. The government opened its consultation on feed-in-tariffs on the 15th of July 2009. FITs will provide micro generators with a fixed payment for every unit of electricity generated and will be guaranteed for 20 years. In addition to this generators will get an export tariff and benefit from free energy. The Feed-in Tariff is available to off grid generators too, but installers must be MCS accredited.
